Chapter 2: What Is Excellence?

Excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good—a pursuit that drives us to become the best version of who God desires us to be. It is not about being perfect, which is defined as being completely without flaws or defects. Only Jesus embodies perfection, and we, as humans, will never fully attain it on this side of heaven (Revelation 21:27). But we are called to pursue excellence—to grow in faith, knowledge, and leadership, and to glorify God in the process.

Unlike perfection, which can trap us in a negative cycle of outcome-based expectations, excellence is process-oriented. It keeps us focused on progress rather than flawless results. Perfectionism demands standards that only God can meet, while excellence invites us into a journey with Him—a journey where trials, setbacks, and victories all serve a greater purpose in shaping who we are.

Importantly, excellence in the abscence of God, can never be excellent. We might achieve success or recognition, but without involving the Creator, our efforts fall short of true excellence. When we invite God into our efforts—whether on the field, in the classroom, or in relationships—we begin to grow in ways that reflect His purpose for our lives.

God uses every season, including sports, to mold us. But as our roles in life shift, so does the arena of our pursuit. Whether in athletics or beyond, the call to excellence remains constant because it reflects our desire to align with God’s will.

Finally, excellence isn’t just personal; it’s missional. It ties back to the core values of B3rd—putting God first, then others (our teammates and neighbors), and ourselves last. When we live this out, we reflect Christ in everything we do.

Excellence matters because it transforms how we live: with purpose, with faith, and with a heart aligned to God.
